MRI Safety of Dental Implants

There are several safety concerns for patients with metallic implants who require MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), including magnetic interactions as well as radiofrequency-induced (RF-induced) heating. Dental implant portfolios present a unique challenge in regard to evaluating MRI safety, as the devices can be stock products or patient-specific products, be intended for single implant use or multiple implant use, and consist of a large variety of components such as bridges, implants, abutments, dentures, orthodontics, etc. (Figure 1). Careful consideration is required in order to select the appropriate worst-case construct for testing, especially for patient specific products, to ensure testing covers the entire dental portfolio. MED Institute helps dental implant manufacturers evaluate their devices for safety in the MRI environment and provides the necessary information for MRI safety labeling and supporting scientific rationale that is reported in the instructions for use (IFU) of the device according to ASTM F2503 and the FDA guidance on establishing safety and compatibility of passive implants in the magnetic resonance environment.
